Draft survey

Cargo weight determination supports financial settlement and helps reduce disputes, while contributing to efficient loading operations. A draft survey measures water displacement before and after (un)loading, with the difference representing the cargo weight. At Peterson, these measurements provide figures that support commercial and regulatory requirements.

    Compliance through draft survey

Peterson operates with independent quantity surveyors, executing every draft survey based on the internationally standardised draft survey protocol. Where other providers stop at inspection, we structurally combine survey execution with logistical coordination and laboratory analyses. This integrated method gives organisations a single, accredited source of weight evidence that support contractual, regulatory and financial settlement requirements.

    Defensible support for financial settlements

Accredited independence and demonstrable quality provide verifiable evidence that supports financial reconciliation, helping reduce dispute risk and strengthen commercial positions.

    2.

    Meticulous calculation factors

Revisions for trim, water density, and non-cargo weight such as fuel oil and drinking water are part of every calculation we perform.

    3.

    Sea condition adaptability

Survey accuracy depends on pitch and swell at the time of loading or discharge. Our surveyors assess and document conditions to maintain result validity.

    4.

    24/7 operational capacity

A large and flexible organisation supports around-the-clock operations, peak loading periods and complex logistical scenarios without scheduling delays.

    5.

    Deep bulk commodity knowledge

Decades of experience across many types of bulk raw materials sharpen measurement interpretation and reduce the chance of overlooked variables.

    How draft survey works

    Vessel survey

Our surveyor boards the vessel and conducts the survey jointly with the chief officer and chief engineer, establishing shared oversight from the start.

    Draft measurement

Draft markings are read at six standard points on the hull: forward, midship, and aft on both port and starboard sides.

    Quantity reporting

A signed quantity agreement is handed to the chief officer and the draft survey report is sent to all relevant parties.

    Peterson is more than logistics

    Settlement support

Peterson provides accredited weight data that supports financial settlement and offers verifiable evidence for regulatory compliance across operations.

    • Operational presence in more than 80 countries means survey coverage aligns with vessel schedules across major trade regions.

    • An independent position in the supply chain, secured through formal accreditations, gives weight determinations the legal standing that settlements demand.

    • One central point of contact consolidates survey planning, execution and reporting, reducing coordination effort for operational teams.

Draft surveys apply to bulk cargo loaded or discharged from vessels. The calculation accounts for trim, water density, fuel oil, drinking water and other non-cargo weight variables aboard.

Highly qualified professionals are available 24/7 to perform a draft survey. Scheduling aligns with vessel arrival windows so operations proceed without waiting time.

We produce an independent report using a dedicated software system. The report includes the calculated loaded or discharged weight and a signed quantity agreement for all relevant parties.
